Suppliers, Manufacturers, Distributors, Wholesaler, and Retailers
Suppliers are the first and main link in a supply chain and exist specifically for a business to business relationship. Suppliers also provide the raw material, goods, and services that will eventually be source by Manufacturers to make a final product. Suppliers can also be described are those who supply the products, including manufacturers, packagers, and processors. Most people refer to suppliers under the name of manufacturers but they are actually the businesses that supply the raw goods to manufacturers. These businesses are often farmers, organic growers, designers, laboratories, etc.
So when you think about a supplier think of companies that create raw or unfinished material like the suppliers of raw hair, product ingredients, tooling products all of which are made by the supplier.
Manufacturers make finished products from raw materials. A manufacturer is a company that produces finished goods from raw materials by using various tools, equipment, and processes, and then sells the goods to consumers, wholesalers, distributors, retailers, or other manufacturers for the production of more complex goods.
Sourcing Specialists – are the procurement and supply chain experts who help businesses to find the right supplier, negotiate costs, and prepare agreements that can help companies to grow their business.
Distributors are an independent agent who’s entered into an agreement to offer and sell the product of another company but isn’t entitled to use the manufacturer’s name as part of its business name. Depending on the agreement, the distributor may be limited to selling only that company’s goods or it may have the freedom to market several different product lines or services from various firms. A distributor works closely with a manufacturer to sell more goods and gain better visibility on these goods. Distributors find wholesalers who will resale their products. A wholesaler works more closely with retailers to match their needs by buying products in bulk at a discount.
Wholesalers buy large quantities of products from the distributors and sell directly to Retailer businesses. The vendor generally carries a large volume of finished goods and/or inventory. When you think about vendor think about businesses that sell ready to use products generally sold in cases and pallets. Most credible vendors require business accounts with government resale certificates. This is one way to know you are dealing with a reputable company.
Retailer – A retailer is a company that buys products from a manufacturer or wholesaler and sells them to end-users or customers. In a sense, a retailer is an intermediary or middleman that customers use to get products from the manufacturers.
Consumer – Consumer is a person who decides on the purchase of a good or a service for personal use, based on personal preferences, beliefs, and needs or the influence of advertising.
